  • Bronze thunderbolt rubberstamps win, Parris missed penalty inconsequential

Lucy Bronze, Visa Player of the MAtch

"Even out of possession we felt comfortable. Defensively we were so solid. We were really clinical and found the gaps in their defence and our defence stayed strong throughout.

"I was practicing that [free kick] this morning. At the end of training we were having a few shots and practiced that one. I've been dreaming of playing in Lyon and getting to that semi-final again, I think all that pressure and passion came out in that strike. I'm excited to be going to Lyon now. USA or France, they're going to be a top team we're going to have to raise our game another level. We're excited to head to Lyon, get some rest and watch the rest of the quarter-finals."

    Phil Neville, England coach

"We've having the time of our lives. We're just where we want to be. I think what you've seen tonight is that Lucy Bronze is the best player in the world. There's no player like her. I'm very lucky [to coach her]. I played full-back, but never to the level that she does."

"We're not bothered who we play [in the semi-final]. We want to play both of them [USA or France]. We're going to go to Lyon, the atmosphere and the occasion will be incredible. My players have proven tonight the bigger the occasion, they better they are."

Norway battled bravely but never recovered from the concession of an early goal, and a resolute England defence was able to keep them at bay. Counted out before the tournament even started, the Norwegians can be proud of a run to the quarter-finals that surprised many and showed that their days at the top of the women's game are not over just yet.

England fans may find watching their team cruise into the semi-finals with such a sense of calm, combined with a winning mentality, almost too good to be true. Yet the Lionesses have grown into this tournament to show an elegance and freedom teh fans just can't get enough of. As with most games during this tournament, England broke records - Ellen White's poached goal lifting her to become England's top scorer in Women's World Cup history, with six goals, five scored this month. Tonight's performance was the best Phil Neville's charges have shown; mature, collected and, perhaps, that of potential competition winners.

    Parris's penalty woe continues

Nikita Parris is the second player who's failed to convert two Women's World Cup penalties - but the first to do so in the same edition. Mia Hamm missed in 1991 versus Japan and in 2003 versus Norway. Parris's other penalty miss coming against Argentina in Group D.

Nikita PARRIS (England) sees her penalty saved by the goalkeeper.
It's more penalty pain for Parris! The soon-to-be Lyon forward saw her last spot-kick saved by Argentina's Vanina Correa in the group stage, and history repeats itself. The No7 strikes her penalty firmly but Hjelmseth is equal to it, diving superbly to her right to tip the penalty away.

This is the most comprehensive and perhaps convincing performance we've seen from England, and have crucially tightened up at the back, too. Norway could be suffering from fatigue in some areas, but England have to remain alert. Goalkeeper Karen Bardsley has been called upon much more during this second half.

    All smiles for England!

The Lionesses have now scored 11 goals at France 2019, beating their previous best total at a Women's World Cup - achieved at Canada 2015 (ten goals).
